Avalanche Statistics of Driven Granular Slides in a Miniature Mound

چکیده
We examine avalanche statistics of rainand vibrationdriven granular slides in miniature soil mounds using experimental and numerical approaches. A crossover from powerlaw to non power-law avalanche-size statistics is demonstrated as a generic driving rate ν is increased, due to diminishing timescale separation (∼ ν) between stress buildup and release. For slowly-driven mounds, the tail of the avalanche-size distribution is a power-law with exponent −2.37 ± 0.40, significantly close to previous findings in empirical landslide data sets. The interevent occurrence time is also analyzed for slowly-driven mounds and it is found that its distribution also follows a power-law trend with exponent ≈ −1.8.

Dynamics of dry granular avalanches.
A fine analysis of the statistics of dry granular avalanches in a rotating drum setup reveals that, beyond the fluctuations, the angle at which an avalanche ends is correlated experimentally to the angle at which the avalanche starts. This correlation resulting from inertia defines an intermediate "neutral" angle that characterizes the corresponding granular pile. In addition, an intensive stud...

– In a seminal experiment, Jaeger et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett., 62 (1989) 40) measured the power spectrum of the velocity of avalanches along a granular pile in a rotating drum. Although their findings started an actively discussed debate on whether self-organized criticality rules granular avalanche dynamics, their experimental results have not been explained in theoretical detail yet. By the use ...
متن کاملThe Slow Erosion Limit in a Model of Granular Flow
We study a 2×2 system of balance laws that describes the evolution of a granular material (avalanche) flowing downhill. The original model was proposed by Hadeler and Kuttler [13]. The Cauchy problem for this system is studied by the authors in the recent papers [2,16]. In this paper, we first consider an initial-boundary value problem. The boundary condition is given by the flow of the incomin...
متن کاملGravity-driven free surface flow of granular avalanches over complex basal topography
A two-dimensional depth-integrated theory is derived for the gravity-driven free surface flow of cohesionless granular avalanches over complex shallow basal topography. This is an important extension of the one-dimensional Savage–Hutter theory. A simple curvilinear coordinate system is adopted, which is fitted to the ‘mean’ downslope chute topography. This defines a quasi-two-dimensional refere...
متن کامل1 2 A pr 2 00 5 Two scenarios for avalanche dynamics in inclined granular layers
We report experimental measurements of avalanche behavior of thin granular layers on an inclined plane for low volume flow rate. The dynamical properties of avalanches were quantitatively and qualitatively different for smooth glass beads compared to irregular granular materials such as sand. Two scenarios for granular avalanches on an incline are identified and a theoretical explanation for th...
